Grade 316L (UNS S31603 / 1.4404) is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel modified with 2.0% to 3.0% molybdenum. This deliberate metallurgical addition dramatically elevates resistance to localized pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments, seawater splash zones, and organic acid solutions. The low carbon formulation (C ≤ 0.030%) prevents sensitizing grain boundary precipitation during structural welding, guaranteeing high mechanical ductility and corrosion resistance.
